The Best time to Kayak in Chile

Chile is certainly one of the main white water kayaking travel destinations now in the world.  The fact that it is situated in the southern hemisphere also makes it a great destination for paddlers coming from Europe, North America and even Asia to escape those long dark nights and cold temperatures of Winter!  However, Chile is a big country and although not very wide, the length of the country is some 4300km.  If you were to place Chile over a map of Europe you will see that it goes from Norway all the way down to southern Spain and then some!

Kayak Chile

What we have organised in the this blog about the best time to kayak in Chile is to split up the areas of kayaking in Chile.  So with this in mind we are looking at:

Kayaking in Pucon with Kayak School Arlberg
  1. Santiago de Chile to Pucon - This covers the regions of Santiago, Maule, Nuble and Bio Bio

  2. In and around Pucon - this covers the regions of Araucania, Los Lagos and Los Rios.

  3. Patagonia  - this is the Aysen region of Chile.

Kayaking Santiago de Chile to Pucon
Generally speaking the rivers around Santiago and southwards tend to be at their best to kayak in the early Spring time which would be October through to November in the southern hemisphere.

Kayaking In and around Pucon
The optimum or best time to kayak is around late November through to January and then again in March once the crazy tourist season in February has finished.  So Spring, early Summer then again in late Summer and early Autumn in the southern hemisphere.

Kayaking Chile Patagonia
In the heart of Chile’s Patagonia the best time to go white water kayaking is from January through to March, so from Summer through to early Autumn in the southern hemisphere.

Chile Spring Kayaking Season

The Spring kayaking season runs from October through to December and can be a good  time to come to kayak in Chile.  The rivers in the middle of Chile are at their optimum, the days are getting longer and the weather, especially around and slightly south of the capital Santiago is lovely!

Kayaking Santiago de Chile to Pucon

Kayaking the Waterfalls of the Rio Claro in Chile

The Chilean Spring offers the best chances of kayaking rivers just south of the capital Santiago such as the Rio Teno, Rio Nuble and the waterfalls of the Rio Claro.  With a good snowpack (such as this year in 2026) in the Andes there will be an abundance of water heading into the rivers south of Santiago.  This can make for some truly memorable descents of these regions rivers and sections with plenty of bucket list options of white water and also waterfalls to be enjoyed by kayakers.  There are certainly some amazing rivers on the way south to Pucon.  Our Chile Kayak Adventures tours and trips at Kayak School Arlberg offer a Kayak Road Trip from Santiago de Chile down to Pucon in the Spring.  Every river we kayaked and led made at least one of our guests top 3 favourite and memorable days kayaking in Chile, so what that means is these rivers should not be missed!

Some other rivers or sections to check out along the way are:
Rio Maipo, which is just on the outskirts of Santiago de Chile.
Rio Archibueno, south of the Rio Nuble and on the way to the city of Chillan.
The Rio Bio Bio, though it has been damed at various points, still provides some great white water kayaking and you can enjoy the big water feel, especially when they release water from the dams!

Kayak Pucon

Kayaking the waterfalls of the Upper Palguin in Pucon

In and around Pucon the rivers will be pumping and they are at least half to a grade harder than when coming to kayak in the Summer.  You should have a solid team when coming to kayak at this time of year in Pucon.  Alternatively get in touch with a professional kayak school to organise a guided trip.  Rivers such as the Palguin and Nevados would be running at a high if, not very high level and they are not the place to be in if you find yourselves seriously out of your comfort zone!  They are certainly more remote than rivers in the Alps and help can be a long way away if you get in trouble.  This is why we would recommend a professional kayak school to lead trips in and around Pucon at this time of the year, as they will not drop you straight into such a challenging river or section.  Instead, kayaking something a little more easier with options to portage or to take easier lines if you lose your confidence such as the Rio Trancura or Rio Liucura.  After which the trip leader can make a plan for you and the group to make sure you get an amazing kayaking adventure in and around Pucon without thinking you are going to have a serious problem or incident around every corner, above every drop or waterfall.  This is what our Chile Team at Kayak School Arlberg do on ALL of our Chile Kayak Adventures and Trips, it makes for an enjoyable and safe time!

Kayaking in Chile Patagonia

It can be really cold still down in Patagonia at this time of year!  Obviously the water levels depend a lot on the weather and how cold it is up in the mountains.  Generally in early Spring it can still snow in the Andes and with the temperatures a lot lower than in the areas and regions south of Santiago, the rivers in Patagonia tend to reflect this.  We would suggest heading south into the heart of Chile’s Patagonia more towards the Summer and Autumn season.

Chile Summer Kayaking Season

The Summer kayaking season runs from December through to February and is by far the most popular time to visit Chile to kayak its amazing whitewater.  The weather is more stable and of course if you are coming from the northern hemisphere, you will be escaping those cold dark winter months!

Kayak Santiago de Chile to Pucon

The levels of the rivers on the way to Pucon have dropped dramatically, with rivers such as the Rio Teno, Rio Nuble and Rio Claro either extremely low or even to low to kayak.  The waterfalls of the Rio Claro will most likely have not enough water in the pools to make any descents of these amazing waterfalls possible.  The Rio Bio Bio will be running due to the dams but how much water is being released everyday is very difficult to predict.  Better to head further south to Pucon and even further south to Patagonia to kayak.

Kayak Pucon

Kayaking the Rio Figueroa in Chile

Kayaking in and around Pucon during the Chilean summer is a big highlight, just avoid the month of February when it is packed with summer tourists. For a more in-depth look into kayaking in Pucon, just check out blog The Best time to kayak in Pucon.

Kayaking in Chile Patagonia

This is the best time to come and kayak the stunning rivers of Chile’s Patagonia.  The Rio Futaleufu is well known and a world class river.  Although it can be really busy in the months of January and February, however, if you start heading south then you will find some stunning rivers with hardly any kayakers or rafters around.  For instance, we drove through the Futaleufu Valley in January in 2026.  The put-in at the Bridge to Bridge section was packed with kayakers and rafters.  There was actually no place to park, it was that busy!  For us it was not a problem as we wanted to check out some rivers south of the Rio Futaleufu and we came across the stunning Rio Figueroa.  The levels are at their optimum  at this time of the year in Patagonia.  If you are lucky, you will get some stable weather giving you some of the most stunning views of snowcapped peaks, hanging glaciers with deep blue skies in the background and of course the majestic Andean Condor soaring high above us. Kayak School Arlberg runs various kayaking trips into Patagonia in the Summer on the Rio Futaleufu or a Kayak Road Trip through Patagonia.

As you head further south rivers such as the Rio Cisnes, Rio Manihuales, Rio Simpson are worth checking out before you go past the city of Coyhaique and onto the Rio Baker.

Chile Autumn Kayaking Season

As Autumn comes around the river levels start to drop.  However, the Autumnal colours are impressive.  Some of the trees are now going into sleep mode and the leaves are turning different shades of yellow and red making the colour of the water in the rivers pop even more!  You can feel that Winter is around the corner and it is just a matter of when the snow will arrive into the Andes mountains.

Kayak Santiago de Chile to Pucon

The Rio Maipo is still working and the majority of rivers heading south to Pucon are dry and waiting for the rains to arrive from the Pacific ocean.  The Rio Bio Bio will be runnable because of the dams but for the rest of the rivers south of Santiago, it is now just a matter of waiting for the rain to arrive.

Kayak Pucon

Whatever rivers in and around Pucon are still running, have lost their volume or pushiness and it is a great time to visit if you are coming to Chile for the first time and feel a little intimidated by the bigger volume of white water or even the hype from influencers and social media posts.  Although the majority of creeks and tributaries do not have enough water, the Upper Palguin still runs and becomes a lot more manageable  to kayak its waterfalls and of course far less intimidating.  The Rio Trancura is also at a low level and it is in March that the annual Mariman Extreme Slalom happens on the Upper Trancura.  This is a great event and you can find out more about this race when Steve was there taking photos for Santiago, the organiser and inspiration behind it.  Just follow this link to the Mariman Extreme Kayaking Blog.

Chile Kayak Adventures with Kayak School Arlberg

The lower section of the Rio Fuy is now nothing harder than a Class 3 and is actually a great section to coach and train on.  The Rio San Pedro takes nearly twice as long to kayak compared the the Spring and early Summer.  What were huge holes to avoid in the lower half of the section in Spring are now big rocks with some great swirly eddy lines to have fun on playing around and stern squirting!  If you are a Class 2 kayaker then there are also rivers on offer.  This is a great time for no stress kayaking in and around the mecca that is Pucon.

Kayaking in Chile Patagonia

Autumn can be a wonderful time to kayak in Patagonia, the river levels are low and again the surrounding countryside is incredible with Autumnal colours.  There are even less tourists around, so you should be sufficiently prepared if you are road tripping through Patagonia as you may not see another vehicle for hours and hours!  Again it is a great time to kayak the rivers of Patagonia have pretty much dropped a grade in difficulty.  The main concern now will be the weather.  You will be kayaking at extreme ends of the planet and  will need to dress accordingly!  One minute it could be lovely, warm and sunny, then the next minute the wind is howling and rain is coming in horizontal!  All the classic rivers will be possible to kayak such as the Rio Futaleufu, Rio Palena, Rio Figueroa, Rio Cisnes and Rio Baker.

Winter Kayaking Season in Chile

The rains become more prolonged and the rivers start to rise from their lowest point to instances of being extremely high and sometimes too dangerous to kayak.  By the time Winter has arrived in Chile, our kayaking season is well underway in Austria and for us there is no better place to be kayaking than on our home rivers in the height of the Austrian summer in the heart of the Alps.

Winter is really the domain for the local Chilean kayakers, a lot of the good kayakers in Chile love this season.  David Cortes and Santi, really enjoy kayaking in Winter as the rivers are big and they are happy to put up with the rain and inclement weather.  Pucon can have days of rain, making the rivers big and committing.  Pucon can also receive some serious storms in Winter and electricity can be out for days in the town with roads blocked or even washed away!  We have seen footage from friends in the Maule and Nuble regions of dams opening the gates with huge amounts of water pumping through!

If you are living in Chile then you will find rivers to kayak for your level.  If you are thinking of flying to Chile to kayak in the southern Winter, be prepared!!
